How Often Should You Replace Bedding?

While nothing may fit quite as nice as an old T-shirt, there are many items that you shouldn’t hold on to well past their prime. As you might imagine, one of the oft-neglected items around your home that may need to be replaced is your sheets and pillows. But how often should you replace your bedding and what signs tell you that it is time? Keep reading to find out!

Sheets and Bedding

While you may think your sheets are starting to peak after breaking them in for a few years, they may be littered with stains, fraying or color fading that could signify they have reached the end of their lifespan. If you have kept up with your sheets, the period when these signs begin to show may be different; however, upgrading your sheets to newer material with a higher thread count may improve comfort. With sheets and bedding, you will typically want to replace them every 2 years and wash them every one to two weeks of the best results.

Comforters or Duvets

It’s no secret that most of us don’t wash our comforter or duvet as often as we should. Truthfully, most people only wash their bedspreads once every few months and, at the very least, twice annually. If possible, you should consider washing your duvet more often to remove sweat and dead skin cells that may accumulate with use. As a good rule of thumb, a comforter or duvet should be replaced every 5 years for the most pleasant experience.

Pillows

Aside from a mattress, pillows are arguably the bed component that buyers are most critical of and, even if your pillow started great, it can quickly begin to deteriorate and change the way it provides support for your head at night. Most aches and pains upon waking can be resolved with the right amount of head support. To aid in this, try to change your pillows once a year or once every two years for the best support possible.

Mattress

If you invested in a quality mattress, you can expect it to last for around 7 to 10 years before it needs to be replaced. Some signs of wear and tear may be that it has started to sag too much and doesn’t provide the right amount of support anymore or your needs may have changed. The mattress is the foundation of a good night’s sleep. Keep that in mind when searching for your next mattress!
