Insufficient Sleep

How Insufficient Sleep Affects Your Body

If you’ve ever spent a night up way past your bedtime, then you are fully aware of the after-effects come morning; this is why coffee mugs exist with branding such as “I’m sorry for the things I said before coffee.” But the long-term effects of insufficient sleep can be more detrimental to your health than you feeling groggy or cranky.

Consistent lack of sleep or reduced sleep quality is getting anything less than 7 hours of sleep regularly. If you constantly sleep for under 7 hours daily, this will eventually lead to health consequences that can affect your entire body.

Sleep is necessary because this is the time that the body uses to heal itself and restore any chemical imbalances. Without enough sleep, your immune system, digestive system, central nervous system, cardiovascular, respiratory, and endocrine systems won’t function normally.

Your bodies tell signs that you need more sleep

1. Trouble concentrating – lack of sleep can impact creativity, problem-solving skills, and your memory negatively. Chronic sleep deprivation can change your mood drastically, making you more emotional, moody, quick-tempered, which could escalate and lead to anxiety or depression.

2. Weight gain – When we do not get enough sleep, the chemicals that send signals to our brain that we have had enough when eating get thrown off balance; this means we are more likely to over-indulge and unable to notice when we’re full.

3. Getting Sick easier – Too little sleep weakens your immune system’s ability to defend you against germs or viruses such as the common cold and flu. It may be more severe for some people and could lead to a risk for high blood pressure and diabetes as insufficient sleep affects the body’s release of insulin, a blood sugar leveling hormone.

Insufficient sleep can drastically lower your quality of life and even affect your sex drive, balance, and coordination. If you are not getting enough sleep, start by checking if there are immediate changes that you can make to the pillows, bed linen, or mattress that you currently have at home. If those are not the issue, then assess your lifestyle and make some adjustments to preserve your health.
